Birdwatching Safaris

Over 1,100 species — from flamingo clouds to endemic specialties

About Birdwatching Safaris

Tanzania is one of Africa's great birding destinations: over 1,100 recorded species, including 30-plus endemics found nowhere else on Earth. Our birding safaris pair specialist guides with habitats from Rift Valley lakes to miombo woodland and mountain forest.

Few countries compress as many bird habitats into one safari circuit. In a single week you can move from the flamingo-lined shores of Lake Manyara and Lake Natron, through the baobab country of Tarangire with its 550 recorded species, to the swampy fringes of Ngorongoro and the riverine forests of Nyerere in the south.

Tanzania's endemic birds are a draw in their own right: the Udzungwa forest partridge, Pemba green pigeon, and the colourful Fischer's lovebird among them. Palearctic migrants swell the numbers between November and April, when resident species are also in breeding plumage — the finest season for serious birders.

What makes a birding safari work is the guide. Our birding guides know calls, habitats and territories, and — crucially — they know how to position a vehicle for light and approach without flushing the bird. Non-birding partners are never bored: the same parks hold all of the big game, so every drive works at two levels.
