Tarangire is northern Tanzania's quiet giant — a park of ancient baobabs, red-earth riverbeds and some of the largest elephant herds in East Africa.
In the dry season the Tarangire River becomes the only reliable water for miles, drawing wildlife in extraordinary numbers — elephant herds of several hundred, big lion prides and rare dry-country species like fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk. With far fewer visitors than its famous neighbours, Tarangire feels like a well-kept secret.
Questions
Several thousand live in the ecosystem; in the dry season herds of 200–300 gather along the river.
