Marangu Route

The historic "Coca-Cola Route" — the only trail with mountain hut accommodation.

Duration

5 or 6 days

Difficulty

Moderate

Distance

≈ 72 km

Accommodation

Mountain huts (dormitory bunks)

Route Overview

The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established trail on Kilimanjaro, and the only one that offers dormitory-style hut accommodation instead of camping. Mandara, Horombo and Kibo huts provide bunk beds, solar lighting and communal dining halls.

It is the shortest and often the cheapest route, ascending and descending the same gentle south-eastern path. Because the 5-day version gains altitude quickly, we strongly recommend the 6-day option with an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut.

Scenery: Rainforest, moorland, Mawenzi views, alpine desert saddle

Why Choose It

  • Sleep in mountain huts — no camping required
  • The most affordable Kilimanjaro route
  • Gentle, well-maintained trail suitable for less experienced trekkers
  • Same trail up and down, so it is logistically simple

Good to Know

  • Lower success rate on the 5-day version due to fast altitude gain
  • Ascent and descent share the same trail, so less scenic variety
  • Huts can feel busy in high season
