Route Overview

The Machame Route is the most popular way up Kilimanjaro, and for good reason. Approaching from the south-west, it crosses every one of the mountain's ecological zones — from dripping rainforest through heather moorland and high alpine desert to the arctic summit glaciers.

Known as the 'Whiskey Route' for its tougher reputation compared to the easier 'Coca-Cola' Marangu Route, Machame is a camping route with a naturally good acclimatization profile: the famous 'climb high, sleep low' day via Lava Tower gives your body the best chance to adjust before the summit push.
