Route Overview

The Lemosho Route begins on the remote western side of Kilimanjaro, with the first two days spent in quiet rainforest where you may spot colobus monkeys. It then crosses the entire Shira Plateau before joining the Machame Route at Lava Tower.

Widely considered the most scenic route on the mountain, Lemosho also offers the best acclimatization profile of any route. Its long, gentle approach gives it the highest summit success rates — we recommend it above all others for first-time climbers.

Scenery: Pristine rainforest, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, southern summit circuit

Why Choose It

  • Highest summit success rate of any route (90%+ on 8 days)
  • Superb, uncrowded scenery on the western approaches
  • Outstanding acclimatization with a gentle, long profile
  • Wildlife sightings possible in the forest section

Good to Know

  • Slightly more expensive due to the longer distance and remote gate transfer
  • Joins the busier Machame trail from Barranco onwards
  • Requires 7–8 days, so more time away from home

Lemosho Route FAQs

For scenery and summit success, yes — Lemosho's longer approach means better acclimatization. Machame is shorter and slightly cheaper, which suits climbers with limited time.
