Route Overview

The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. The northern slopes receive far less rainfall, making Rongai the best choice during the wetter months.

It is the quietest of the main routes — for the first days you may not see another climbing party. The trail passes the jagged spires of Mawenzi before crossing the saddle to Kibo Hut, and descends via the Marangu Route, so you still see both sides of the mountain.

Scenery: Wild northern slopes, Mawenzi Tarn, the Saddle, summit via Gilman's Point

Why Choose It

  • The quietest main route — a true wilderness feel
  • Driest side of the mountain, good in shoulder seasons
  • Gradual ascent profile with an acclimatization-friendly 7-day option
  • Chance of wildlife sightings on the lower northern slopes

Good to Know

  • Scenery is less varied than the southern routes until you reach Mawenzi
  • Remote gate transfer adds to logistics and cost
  • Summit night from Kibo Hut is long and demanding
