Katavi is raw, remote and barely visited — dry-season floodplains where hundreds of hippos crowd shrinking pools and buffalo herds a thousand strong kick up the dust.
Tanzania's third-largest park receives only a few hundred visitors a year. In the dry season the Katuma River contracts to muddy pools heaving with hippos and crocodiles, while lions and wild dogs patrol the plains. For seasoned safari-goers, Katavi is the holy grail.
