Walking Safaris

Leave the vehicle behind and feel Africa under your boots

About Walking Safaris

A walking safari changes everything: the scale, the silence, the adrenaline. Accompanied by an armed ranger and an expert walking guide, you read tracks, smell the bush and meet wildlife on its own terms.

From a vehicle, the bush is a film. On foot, it becomes a conversation. You learn to read fresh spoor in the dust, to tell how long ago an elephant passed, to smell wild sage crushed underfoot and to feel the alertness that comes from sharing the landscape with large animals at ground level.

Tanzania offers some of the finest walking in Africa. In Nyerere and Ruaha, multi-day walking between fly-camps is a tradition stretching back decades. In the Serengeti's wilderness zones and on the Ngorongoro highlands, walks range from a few hours to full days — always accompanied by an armed TANAPA ranger and one of our senior walking guides.

Walking safaris are not about chasing big game; they are about the thousand details a vehicle misses — dung beetles, tracks, orchids, termite cathedrals — punctuated by the heart-quickening possibility of meeting an elephant or buffalo on foot. Most guests tell us their walking hours become the memories they talk about for years.

Questions

Walking Safaris FAQs

Walking with large wildlife carries inherent risk, which is why every walk is led by an armed, licensed ranger and an experienced walking guide, with strict safety protocols. Incidents are extremely rare, and your guide will constantly read wind, terrain and animal behaviour.
