Trek Overview

This 6-day Machame itinerary covers the complete Whiskey Route: rainforest, the Shira Plateau, the climb-high-sleep-low day at Lava Tower, the Barranco Wall, and a summit night via Stella Point to Uhuru Peak.

It is the fastest version of the Machame Route and suits fit, well-prepared climbers. If your schedule allows, the 7-day version adds a Karanga Camp night and significantly improves summit success.

  1. 6 Days Machame Route — day 1
    Day 1

    Machame Gate → Machame Camp

    Register at Machame Gate and begin trekking through dense montane rainforest. The trail is often muddy and alive with birdlife and colobus monkeys before opening into the heather zone near camp.

  2. 6 Days Machame Route — day 2
    Day 2

    Machame Camp → Shira Cave Camp

    A shorter, steeper day climbing out of the forest onto the Shira Plateau, with your first clear views of Kibo's summit cone and the giant senecios of the moorland.

    Day 3

    Shira Cave → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

    The key acclimatization day: climb high to the Lava Tower at 4,630m for lunch, then descend to sleep low at Barranco Camp beneath the great Barranco Wall.

    Day 4

    Barranco Camp → Barranco Wall → Karanga → Barafu Camp

    Scramble up the Barranco Wall in the morning light, traverse to Karanga for lunch, then continue across the barren alpine desert to Barafu — your summit base camp.

  5. 6 Days Machame Route — day 5
    Day 5

    Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

    Summit day. Leave around midnight for Stella Point and on to Uhuru Peak for sunrise at the roof of Africa, then descend all the way to Mweka Camp in the moorland.

    Day 6

    Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate

    A gentle final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate and say farewell to your crew. Transfer back to your hotel.
