Great Migration Safari Guide

12 min read · Written by Natureloop safari specialists

The Great Migration is a year-round cycle of over two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle moving through the Serengeti ecosystem. January to March, the herds calve on the southern short-grass plains around Ndutu. By May and June they push through the western corridor and Grumeti River. From July to October, the northern Serengeti's Mara River hosts the dramatic crossings most travellers dream of.

River crossings are not scheduled events — herds may gather for hours or days before crossing, or not at all. The key is positioning: staying in a camp close to the herds, with a guide who reads their movement daily. That's exactly how we plan migration safaris.

For the best experience we recommend at least three nights in the migration region, travelling in the right month for the right area, and keeping expectations flexible — the reward is one of nature's greatest spectacles, witnessed without crowds.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

Tanzania is a year-round safari destination. June–October brings dry-season concentrations and migration river crossings, while January–March offers the southern Serengeti calving season and lush green landscapes.

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?

Private mid-range safaris typically start around $350–450 per person per day; luxury journeys run higher. Our published packages start from $1,990 per person including accommodation, park fees, guide and vehicle.

How many days should I spend on safari?

We recommend at least five to seven days for the northern circuit — enough for the Serengeti and Ngorongoro without rushing. Add Zanzibar and ten days becomes ideal.

What type of accommodation is best?

Tented camps put you closest to nature with real beds and en-suite bathrooms; lodges add pools and solid walls. Most itineraries mix both — we'll match the style to you.

Should I choose a private or group safari?

All Natureloop safaris are private — your own vehicle, guide and schedule. It costs a little more than joining a group but transforms the experience.
